International Women’s Day is celebrated all over the world on March 8th every year. It celebrates the vital role women play in their families, communities and countries and recognises the huge barriers that women have overcome in the fight for gender equality. However, this is not just a day of celebration, but also an opportunity to reflect on the challenges that lie ahead as we remember that women in every country of the world still do not have equal rights to men.

In the UK:

So what is your Students' Union doing to help in the fight for gender equality?

  • We’re re-writing the Union’s Equality Policy and Action Plan to reaffirm our commitment to equality, in practice as well as on paper
  • We’ve written a paper on supporting student parents which recommends that the University start collecting data regarding student parent numbers
  • We're currently working towards the NUS' Zero Tolernace to Sexual Harassment accreditation
  • We’re working with the University to write student focused equality objectives
  • Campaigning against cuts to public services as mandated to do so at the EGM
  • Our Women’s Officer has organised a fantastic IWD event, for more information click here

Bristol City Council has put together an exciting programme of events for International Women’s Day here.
