Policy & Research

Research

Bristol SU regularly conducts research into the student experience. Recent pieces of research include:

Policy

Students' Union policy defines the position of Bristol students on specific issues and outlines actions that elected officers and representatives should take to resolve problems that affect students at university, within the Bristol community and on a national scale.

Policy is the most formal and long-term means of directing the work of the elected officers. Less formal or smaller issues can also be raised as a discussion topic at Student Council.

Policy is created through Student Council, the Annual Members' Meeting and referenda (all student votes) and remains active for three years - or longer, if it is renewed.

The Union also has several broader policies including:

All policy is assigned to a full time officer to work on. Below is a list of all the policy passed in the last three years under the officer that is working on it (including complete or active policy). There is also a section for policy that is about to lapse, which you can bring to the next student council to renew. Please email bristolsu-council@bristol.ac.uk if you have any questions. Policy under each officer is in order of most recently passed at the top.

  • 08/04/15 - Alice Phillips emailed Neil Davey, Student IT Experience Manager in IT services, and received this reply -
"At present it is so significantly difficult to change a username and ensure that all systems that rely on it still work for the person that it is near enough impossible. There are many different systems and services which rely on the username as an identifier and most are not designed so that usernames in them can be changed, once someone is registered to use them. Even if it is possible to change a username sensibly in one system then that doesn't mean it would be possible in all systems, think of the wide range of computer-based systems and services that you use from day to day and then quadruple it for the number that rely on your username. You don't see the infrastructure behind the user-facing systems but they also rely on a single identity to link you to them. It is simply not feasible to change someone's username and for everything to continue working normally"
  • 30/04/15 - AP contacted John Hay at the Strategic Projects Office, who is in charge of the project to create a new identity management system. He said that even under a new system changing username would probably not be straightforward. He suggested that instead the project could consider having randomised usernames. AP replied that this was a very good idea and expressed a hope that this option would be taken forward.

Ending Bristol's silent private school bias - 09/02/2012

Active

  • 09/10/15 - Jamie Cross has received response from the University which is summarised as follows:

The university publish their data on their state school intake and it can be found by following this link.

The university has said that they focus on the performance of a school opposed to its category which was a decision made by senior management. This decision has been supported by the Office of Fair Access. The official admissions policy can be found here, where the relevant section is section seven.

The proportion of the University’s Undergraduate intake from state schools in 2014-2015 was 60.7%. 69.3% of all undergraduate applications came from the state sector. A detailed spreadsheet of the stats has been made available to the Union and can be requested to view.

There is no data available on the number of students who sat their GCSEs at both state and independent schools as it is not collected by the UK Student Recruitment Department.

  • 08/10/15 - Jamie Cross has sent motion to Lucy Collins, head of UK Student Recruitment at the University, who will provide a responce to the motion.
  • 05/03/15 - AP raised this motion in a meeting of the widening participation and recruitment team - made the case strongly that we need a target for state school students as this is still stubbornly low and unchanging.
  • Response was that there may be appetite for a state school target under the new Vice Chancellor.
