8 Things That Happened for Bristol’s year as European Green Capital

Throughout 2015, the eyes of the world have been on Bristol as the first UK city to be awarded the title of ‘European Green Capital.’ All year, groups across the city have been running all sorts of innovative activities to help reinforce Bristol’s position as the greenest city in the UK.  Here are some of the awesome things that students have done this year:

1.Over 50 Bristol students knitted scarves and blankets for people affected by homelessness during a BIG KNITathon to raise money for the Big Issue  

2.A team of students raised £50,000 to launch a student bike loan scheme, Balloon Bikes ­ to help students travel around Bristol sustainably!

They also won the TravelWest 2015 Most Innovative Sustainable Transport Measure Award.

3.UWE and Bristol students have volunteered over 100,000 hours for sustainability­related projects during Bristol's year as Green Capital

4.Fossil Free Bristol Uni delivered their petition to the Vice Chancellor with over 2000 signatures

5.Over 70 students have participated in Way to Grow gardening project, giving over 140 hours to a variety of local community gardens

6. University of Bristol has awarded 175 Green Capital Change Makers this year, of which 35 earned the Gold level award

7. Bristol and UWE students donated 72 tonnes of unwanted items when they moved out over Summer to the Bristol Big Give

This helped generate up to £150,000 for local and national charities

8.140 students have attended ‘Responsible Careers’ events at Bristol SU, helping them consider how they can use their degree­specific skills to create a more sustainable future
