Our next Rep of the Month is Zher Rem Tan, a 3rd year Economics, Finance and Management Rep. He was nominated by staff members on his Student Staff Liasion Committee for consistently attending meetings with helpful feedback from his peers. He was commended for being incredibly proactive in his approach to the role.
We caught up with him to ask him a few questions.
1) What inspired you to be a Course Rep?
I wanted to engage with students and get to know more people.
2) How have you found the experience?
Fun! As a Course Rep I have been able to engage more with the Students Union. I’m also a member of Democratic Standards Committee, attend Student Council and attended the Annual Members Meeting. It’s been interesting learning how democracy works at Bristol SU.
3) What have you done so far? Is there anything you are particularly proud of?
Academic staff sometimes overlook details of the course, as a Course Rep I’ve been able to help monitor the quality of teaching, protecting the benefits of the students. I also encouraged my juniors in 1st and 2nd year to run to be a Course Rep.
4) What would you tell someone thinking of running to be a Course Rep?
Give it a go! It’s not mentally challenging. It’s made me more confident when speaking to staff. It can be quite hard to speak to strangers but as a Course Rep0 it's my job to talk to students so I have become more confident.
