Ginny: Sport & Student Development Officer

Hi, I’m Ginny and I am the Sport and Student Development officer at the SU. My role is to support sports clubs, and also any area of the university which engages students in physical activity. I am also responsible for helping students develop their skills in areas outside of academic studies.

As a student, I studied Zoology alongside being heavily involved in sport. When I came to Bristol I had no particular desire to play club sport, let alone make it the focal point of my university career. However, after trying Women’s Rugby for the first time in my first Welcome WeekI was hooked, and by my second year I was club captain. In my third year I started to engage more with the SU, and became  chair of the Sports Network before running to become Sport and Student Development Officer.

I am so excited for this year! I am so proud of our sports clubs and everything they do and I can’t wait to showcase them as much as I can. I am particularly passionate about engaging more students in sport and physical activity at Bristol, so watch this space.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with any questions or ideas by email or on Facebook.

Here's what I'm working on this year:

1. Increase the representation of Intramural, B:active and Fit&Fab in the Sports Network

  • Increase communication with activators and intramural representatives
  • Roll out personal invites to forums
  • Increase publicity of all three initiatives through the Bristol Sport facebook, keeping them all student lead.
  • Setting up google form so students can submit requests for promotion through the SU.

2. Increase membership of self-identified women in sports clubs

  • Create campaign content for This Girl Can, focussing on real students and how sport has made a difference to their lives
  • Run a campaign to increase the visibility of inspirational female athletes and team captains in the university
  • Carry out research into the barriers students face to getting involved in sport
  • Increase the publicity of Women’s sport, through SU and Sport, Exercise and Health (SEH) channels

3. Review Varsity

  • Bring back the sense of competition and make it a day of sporting celebration

  • Work with team delivering Varsity to ensure:

o A condensed and cohesive series

o That participation events do not clash with varsity day

o A countdown to varsity day

o A "meet the captains" promo

    o Promotional videos

4. Expand the #WeAreBristol community

  • Aim to include more students, from B:active, Intramural and casual gym-goers
  • Provide intramural kits under the #WeAreBristol brand
  • Increased publicity of non- traditional sports
  • #WeAreBristol branding all sport, including spaces in the gym and classes
  • #WeAreBristol kit available for everyone, not only if you are connected to a club

5. Increase access to sports facilities

  • Lobby the university to provide a consistent bus route from the university to Coombe Dingle, making it free on a Wednesday
  • Lobby the university to increase the amount of indoor sport space

6. Increase the SU's support of sports clubs and improve sponsorships

  • Make use of the SU's existing connections with potential sponsors
  • Create a catalogue to send to companies with details of all clubs and societies looking for sponsorship
