What if I'm not a registered student?


Associate Membership of the Students' Union may be open to you even if you are not a registered student. This is predominantly available to:

  • Union & University staff members
  • University Alumni
  • Volunteer coaches and instructors
  • Partners or dependents of registered students
  • Students studying at other institutions
  • Neighbours of the Union
  • Community users of the union facilities

We derive our funding, indirectly, from the government via annual block grant awarded from the University. Consequently, we are only allowed to spend that money for the educational benefit of our full members. 


What are the categories of Associate Membership?

For non-students to access sports clubs, societies, services, events and facilities

For Bristol SU staff and Officers

For non-students who are volunteering their time  as a coach/instructor

An award available for recommendation by Bristol SU clubs/societies


Annual Associate Membership


Annual Associate Membership entitles you to:

  • access to Bristol SU's clubs and societies*1
  • make use of the unions facilities and services*2
  • access to events*3

*1 except where the club/society already have 1/3 membership of non full-time members

*2 except advice & representation services

*3 except where those events are specifically members only. Certain restrictions will apply to NUS Card holders only.


To buy Associate membership please log into this website as a guest, and then fill in this form. We will then send you a confirmation email saying that you have been approved for membership, and you will be able to join this group.

For the academic year 2018-19 the annual fee is £25. Associate membership will be purchasable from the beginning of September


Honorary Annual Membership


Membership may be awarded, on request, to any persons under a contract of employment with the Union or to Bristol SU Trustees who are not already full members. For further information please contact


Volunteer Annual Membership


Our volunteer coaches and instructors are important to us, offering our clubs and societies many, many hours of their expertise at no cost. We consequently offer free annual membership as indication of our heartfelt thanks of them giving up their time.

The process of application will be approved by the relevant club or society President or Secretary and will need to be renewed annually. To apply, please contact The individual in question will be required to complete the Membership Application form above but will not be required to pay the Annual fee.


Honorary Life Memberships


This membership exists to allow both full members and honorary annual members to acknowledge significant contributions to Bristol SU with the award of Life Membership. Recommendations will be considered and agreed once a year by Bristol SU's Senior Leadership staff and officer team and awarded during Bristol SU awards season. The criteria for Honorary Life Memberships:

1) Full-time Officers receive this at the end of their term of office

2) Bristol SU staff who are leaving or retiring (and have completed over 5 years' service and made a significant contribution to help Bristol SU achieve their aims and vision)

3) Trustees at the end of their term of office or who leave during their term and have made a significant contribution to Bristol SU. 

4) University of Bristol Staff who are leaving or retiring (and have completed over 5 years’ service and made a significant contribution to help Bristol SU achieve their aims and vision)

Membership Fee Inclusions


Prior to signing up to a Club or Society speak to the Committee to find out what your membership includes and if there are any further expenses throughout the year.


Service Standards


All Club or Society members can expect to receive:


  • The opportunity to attend regular meetings, events, activities, trips and socials as arranged.
  • The opportunity to stand for a committee position or vote in their elections (Bristol students only).
  • For Sports Club – to attend regular training sessions and have the opportunity to be selected for the teams.

When joining a club or society you are agreeing to abide by the constitution, general rules, regulations and policies of University of Bristol Students’ Union and also the Club or Society Code of Conduct which sets out the level of behaviour & discipline expected of all Club & Society members.

Refund Policy


Any customer who pays for a membership subscription to a Bristol SU Society, Sports Club, Student Media and initiatives has a 14 day cooling off period from the time and date of purchase during which they have the right to cancel the subscription and receive a full refund. If you do decide to cancel within the 14 days, Bristol SU will refund your payment within a further 30 days of the cancellation.  To request a refund please email:


Data sharing (Sports Club members only)


Please be aware that Bristol SU may share data relating to the members of its sports clubs with the Centre for Sport, Exercise and Health (a department of the University).  This information may be used for the purposes of communicating direct with these members and/or to cross-reference against SEH's Sports Pass membership records.


As part of Bristol SU's membership of British Universities & Colleges Sports (BUCS) Bristol SU may have to share data on to its sports clubs members so BUCS can, from time to time, communicate with these members.

If you're joining one of the societies listed below please be aware that your name and email address will be shared with Bristol Hub for the purpose of keeping you up to date with their activities through their email “The Week”:
