Chess gets a bad rep. You think chess, you think of two slightly balding men spending long afternoons in a musty library. You think of slightly queasy innuendos with the word 'checkmate' and silent playing rooms. Am I right?
We're on a mission to change that image. Did you know that there is a form of chess called bullet chess, which is played in under a minute? Did you know that chess is one of the fastest growing esports in the world, enjoying a huge fanbase on Twitch? Did you know that the current world champion, Magnus Carlsen, is 28 and has previously done modelling for G Star Raw?
Chess isn't just for the academics. Our society fields three teams in the Bristol District League every week, playing home and away at various clubs in the city. Our C team is open to anyone, beginners included.
Chess is a thinking game, yes. Tournaments are played in silence, yes. But that's not what our club is like. Socials are socials and this year we're hoping to host events which aren't even chess-related e.g. pub quizzes.
So. Come try it out. You'll probably be surprised.
