The Men’s Hockey Club is one of the biggest and best sports clubs at the university. We pride ourselves on being a very welcoming and inclusive club and are open to players of all abilities. We run five teams that play on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The excellent facilities at Coombe Dingle and dedicated coaching staff that we offer (consisting of both professional coaches and senior players at the club) will give you the perfect opportunity to improve any aspect of your game regardless of the level that you play at. Furthermore, we are a very sociable bunch so you are sure to meet a wide range of people from different halls and courses if you join us.
Our first team currently competes in the highest tier of BUCS competition nationally on Wednesdays and National Conference West. Performance squads play two matches per week, train twice a week and have fitness and strength training sessions run by the coaches and The Performance Sport department . Selection for the first and second teams requires considerable time commitments and high levels of personal fitness hence we recommend that any new students aspiring to play in a performance squad should attend preseason training- more information can be found on our website www.bristolhockey.com
Our lower teams also participate in BUCS and the Davis Wood league but at a slightly less competitive level. In these teams there is more of a focus on enjoying hockey with friends rather than pure performance. That said, we still aim for promotion every year!
These squads are perfect for anyone who may have less experience playing hockey or who have not played for a while to build up their skills, fitness and confidence through match play. Again, these squads play two matches a week and have two training sessions but there is less commitment expected and more flexibility for players in these teams.
The hockey club has a vibrant social atmosphere and is a fantastic way to meet a group of like-minded people. We are renowned for our mixed socials that we hold every Wednesday with the Ladies Hockey Club and which end in Bunker with all of the university sports clubs. Furthermore we hold two black tie dinners for the mens and ladies clubs every year as well as numerous other events such as alumni evenings, charity events and a mixed tour over Easter.
