Our occasional weekends away are most members' highlight of the club. We meet up with students from other universities for two packed days of orienteering training and racing with a quality social on the Saturday night. You will need to pay the £15 full membership price to come but it is well worth it. We use the money to subsidie the transport and accomodation cost making things cheaper for you in the long run.
The club competes in races most weekends all year round. But the highlight of the year is the BUCS Inter-University Championships, usually held in March.
Regarding transport to events, we normally arrange lifts with members of Bristol Orienteering Klub (BOK) which keeps the cost down. At competitions there are courses planned for all abilities where the length gets longer and the navigation harder as you improve. Race entry for students is normally arround £3 making Orienteering one of the cheapest sports around.
Being a full member also allows you to hire kit from us free of charge. We offer precise thumb compasses, whistles, electronic scoring equipment (SI dibbers), and description holders.
If you are at all interested in Orienteering (and since you are reading this then that should be a "yes") then doing a race is a must. We will let you come to your first race before asking you to buy full membership as a trial. The intense competition, isolation, and thrill on running through rivers, marshes, and open forest is simply incomparable to training sessions (although we make training very engaging!).
