At People & Planet, we strive to enact change in the world around us - change that starts right here, at Bristol University. Our society is a group of passionate activists dedicated to making our university more ethical in any way that we can. We believe that if money talks, we have the power to silence it. We believe that all people have human rights that must be met, regardless of background. We believe that the world is not beyond saving.
Our society, a merger of the Fossil Free and Undoing Borders campaigns, has already achieved great things. In February 2018, the University pledged to fully divest from the fossil fuel industry, thanks to the efforts of our members who refused to allow Bristol to continue funding climate chaos. Following our Student Union’s boycott of the border industry in support of a People and Planet motion in June 2018, the Society pressed the University to cut contracts with companies which uphold the border regime on campus. In May 2019, the University committed to doing so. But there is always more to do.
This year, we will continue to campaign for the University to remove borders to education and to radically champion its commitment to being an accredited University of Sanctuary. The Home Office gets universities to do the dirty work for them by surveilling international and migrant students, which can lead to visa revocations and students losing their place at university. We want the university to resist the Hostile Environment and instead give primacy to protecting the human rights of international and migrant students. We want a border-free campus.
We will also be tracking the University’s commitment to reach zero carbon by 2030. We know that Universities can be ambitious in their Green pledges and promises, only to turn out to be full of hot air. Thus we will ensure that the University does not roll back on its pledge. Further, we will be supporting the fight to demilitarise our campus, by cutting financial and academic ties with the Arms industry. The University must not be complicit in war and violence.
We will be running promotional and educational events throughout the year, starting with our Give-It-A-Go session during the second week of first term. We need your help to keep changing our world. If you are passionate and hard-working - and up for a good protest (online and offline!) - then the People & Planet is the society for you.
