What does a foodbank do?
Everyday in Britain thousands of people are unable to buy food and feed themselves for a multitude of reasons, ranging from unemployment to low income levels. By providing food to those in need, foodbanks are able to thwart criminal behaviour, family collapse and health problems.
In Bristol, it is estimated that the number of people in need of three-day emergency food supplies is 50,606 (April-September 2017), and 18,280 of those food supplies were given to children.
What do we hope to achieve?
If every student at University of Bristol gave one item of food to the FoodBank, it would roughly equate to 18,000 items - this could feed many people in Bristol!
Our aim is to get every Halls of Residence & University Faculty to implement a scheme for non-perishable foods. By sourcing and collecting food - by asking for donations from students - our society will organise those supplies into parcels. Then, operational food banks will provide a parcel to those who hold emergency food supply vouchers.
