Widening Participation Officer

Widening Participation Officer - Kelly EmelleWidening Participation Officer - Kelly Emelle

I am the Widening Participation Officer here at Bristol SU and I work with the Equality, Liberation and Access Officer to represent the interests of students who identify as Widening Participation.

Join the Widening Participation Network

Here is my manifesto:

Who am I?

I am different

I am experienced

I am a BME student from a state school in inner city London

I have worked in the Widening Participation (WP) dept. since starting university

I understand the problems that arise from a lack of representation

I work as a mentor inspiring younger students

I recognise that this needs to change

I volunteer as a tutor teaching disadvantaged students

Why me?

I believe representation is the key to widening participation.

I will implement strategies in these two key areas:

1. Under-representation of state-school students

The student body does not reflect the UK population. I will work to increase recruitment from state schools and other under-represented groups.

  • Reviewing and reforming current outreach programmes
  • Initiate new and varied outreach programmes
  • Develop relations with WP alumni to increase funding and support

2. Enhancing the student experience

Widening participation does not end with the recruitment process. I will work to ensure the WP students are well supported and represented within university.

  • Support the BME Officer in liberation campaigns
  • Campaign for a more diverse curriculum
  • Encourage student participation in union affairs
  • Online feedback system for students to share and receive support
