What are the Society Awards?

The Bristol SU Society awards is an awards night dedicated purely to recognising our amazing societies and their committees! This year the Society Awards will be going digital and everyone is invited! The event took place on Monday 15 June and was broadcast live from the Bristol SU Facebook page. You can view the 2020 winners below.

The categories explained

Society Event of the Year

The Event of The Year Award is for a brilliant event you’ve enjoyed putting on or taking part in. Whether it’s an amazing speaker, a great social, a cracking performance or a stunning careers event we want to hear what was your event of the year!

The panel will look for:

  • A high volume of attendance and involvement
  • An innovative and creative event that stands out from the crowd
  • An event with impact on members, attendees or the local community

As well as a passionate nomination!

Individual Award for Outstanding Contribution

The Individual Award for Outstanding Contribution can be awarded to any member of a society who has shown particular dedication, enthusiasm and commitment. This can be any one person, including committee members or other members in any leadership position - anyone who improves a society and the way it works!

The panel will look for:

  • Demonstrable positive impact on the society and/or its members
  • Commitment above and beyond the call of duty
  • A nominee who inspires and enables those around them

As well as a passionate nomination!

Most Inclusive Society

An award for a society where everyone feels welcome and included. This may be a society which has done something in order to diversify its membership or to ensure all its members feel safe and a valued part of the society!

The panel will look for:

  • Initiatives to diversify membership or integrate new members
  • Efforts to ensure society activity is accessible and enjoyable for all
  • Positive feedback from members

As well as a passionate nomination!

Best New Society

The panel will look for:

  • Focused efforts on gaining membership and securing longevity of the society
  • Held multiple events to raise awareness of the society
  • Evidence of realistic planning for both short term and long term aims
  • Made excellent use of SU initiatives and resources

Academic & Careers Society of the Year

For an academic, departmental or career focused society that truly had an outstanding year - over and above its peers!

The panel will look for:

  • Engagement across different years and cohorts
  • A strong relationship with relevant departments
  • Demonstrable development opportunities for members
  • Evidence of a society which excels in some or all of Bristol SU’s values

As well as a passionate nomination!

Campaigns & Causes Society of the Year

For a campaigns, causes, or politically focused society that truly had an outstanding year - over and above its peers!
The panel will look for:

  • High levels of participation
  • Widespread awareness and/or engaging materials and information
  • Demonstrable successes or positive impact
  • Evidence of a society which excels in some or all of Bristol SU’s values

As well as a passionate nomination!

Culture or Faith Society of the Year

For a cultural or faith focused society that truly had an outstanding year - over and above its peers!

The panel will look for:
• High volume of student involvement
• Commitment to increased membership and community building
• Demonstrable successes or positive impact
• Evidence of a society which excels in some or all of Bristol SU’s values

Performing Arts Society of the Year

For a performance focused society that truly had an outstanding year - over and above its peers!

Physical Activities Society of the Year

For a physical activity focused society that truly had an outstanding year - over and above its peers!

  • Evidence of a society which excels in some or all of Bristol SU’s values

As well as a passionate nomination!

Society of the Year

This award will be presented at The Bristol SU Awards.

This award recognises the contribution of a society to the student community.

The panel will look for:

  • Commitment to Bristol SU values, especially if evidenced through the Balloon Accreditation Scheme
  • Innovative and creative methods to seek new members and increase participation for the activity
  • Impact of the group on the student community outside of the Society’s core membership

Digital Community Award

The panel will look for groups who:

  • Continue to engage with your membership digitally
  • Created an online community when you couldn’t meet in person
  • Help to tackle loneliness
  • Feats to improve the well being of members
