Buddy Circle Facilitator - support new international students

Many international students attend pre-sessional summer courses because they have received an undergraduate or postgraduate offer from the University of Bristol and want to develop their academic skills, improve their academic English, and learn about living and studying in the UK. This year pre-sessional courses will run online only. 

“Buddy Circles” is a virtual summer programme organised by the Global Lounge team to help these students feel part of the University community from the comfort of their home abroad. The programme is run by Buddy Circle Facilitators who are current University of Bristol students and recent graduates. In this role you will share your personal experience as a student living in the UK as well as building relationships with international students and helping them connect with one another.  

Successful applicants need to be available for only one of the two programme cycles: July 7 – August 4 or July 21 – August 11.  
 
Please note the first programme cycle is one week longer than the second one.   
 
First programme cycle: July 7 – August 4 2.5-hour virtual induction at 13:00, 1st July (Wed)  5 x one-hour sessions every Tuesday at 13:30 from July 7 to August 4 5 x one hour long weekly preparation in your own time, watching our recorded training and reading session notes  
Total hours: 12.5 hours  
 
Second programme cycle: July 21 – August 11 2.5-hour virtual induction at 13:00, 1st July (Wed) or 13:00 15th July (Wed)  4 x one-hour sessions every Tuesday at 13:30 from July 21 to August 11  4 x one-hour weekly preparation in your own time, watching our recorded training and reading session notes

Total hours: 10.5 hours  
 
If you are unavailable for the induction or some programme weeks, you can still take part. You will be asked to share your availability (and when you are unavailable) in the application form.

 You do not require any previous experience for this position. In fact, we believe this programme presents a meaningful opportunity to build a vast range of transferable skills. Every applicant will become a volunteer after completing our virtual induction. You can volunteer from anywhere in the world.

Key responsibilities

You will be expected to facilitate interactive one-hour virtual sessions* for a group of 10-20 pre-sessional students who will stay together throughout the programme. Each session will be themed and involve: • Running icebreakers and social activities to help international students get to know one another • Sharing practical advice about different aspects of living in the UK such as culture, lifestyle, public transport, shopping and other • Answering questions about the University and student life from your personal experience as a student Thorough training and guidance will be provided. You will be given resources to guide you through your sessions.
