Caring in Bristol believe that everyone has the right to a home, to have hope and to feel part of a community, that’s why we work across a number of projects helping people who are sleeping rough but also helping prevent and support people so they don’t end up on the street in the first place. These projects include:
The 365 Shelter offers a safe alternative to a night on the streets to up to fifteen people who would otherwise be sleeping rough.
The shelter is a partnership with St Mungo’s Street Outreach Team and the Quakers. It works in a pop-up style operating overnight from Bristol Central Quaker Meeting House. Guests at the shelter are referred to us by the Outreach Team following an initial assessment; where guests are found to have low support needs that can be met by a volunteer team, we’re an appropriate shelter for people to be referred to.
Every night, two of our brilliant volunteers open the shelter to our guests at 10.30pm, provide hot drinks and a welcoming environment to guests and then remain at the shelter until morning. By 8am, the shift is over and the building is returned to its normal use, until that evening, when we do it all again.
We ask volunteers joining the team to consider committing one night a month. Our inspirational volunteer team includes students, mid-career professionals and retired couples from a range of backgrounds, all of whom share a simple commitment to offering more than a night on the street to people sleeping rough in Bristol.
Caring at Christmas
Caring at Christmas provides shelter, food, warmth, company, activities and entertainment alongside medical and emotional help and support for nine days over the Christmas period.
Last Christmas over 700 volunteers came together to give hundreds homeless and vulnerable people in Bristol food, warmth, company and shelter. Over the ten days that our Caring at Christmas 2018 project ran, we provided day support to an average of 84 people each day, bed spaces for an average of 47 people each night and served 3,902 meals.
We are currently beginning to plan for Caring at Christmas 2019. Such is the broad nature of the project, we are always looking for a broad range of volunteers with all manner of skills to help with the project. This can range from office volunteers to help with the logistics to volunteers with a particular talent that wish to provide some sort of entertainment. Please don't hestitate to get in touch as there's always a way to help!
Cheers Drive is a pioneering project by Caring in Bristol, providing food parcels to people experiencing homelessness in the city and staying in new temporary emergency accommodation during Covid-19. We are partnering with Josh Eggleton (Pony and Trap, Root, Salt & Malt) and the team at Pasta Loco and Emmeline to produce and distribute nutritious meal to those in need.
The food distributor role consists of delivering these meals door to door. You will do this as part of a team and be paired up with experienced volunteers. Shifts last no longer than a couple of hours in evening, from 17.45-19.30. The role includes lots of interaction with potentially vulnerable people, and as such we require all our volunteers to read our guidance on relationship boundaries prior to volunteering.
