Alzheimer's Society is the UK 's leading support and research charity for people with dementia, their families and carers. We provide information and support to people with any form of dementia and their carers through our publications, National Dementia Helpline, website, and around 3,000 local services. We campaign for better quality of life for people with dementia and greater understanding of dementia. We also fund an innovative programme of medical and social research into the cause, cure and prevention of dementia and the care people receive.
Memory cafes are a great place for the community to socialise, relax and find dementia advice in a supportive atmosphere. Once a month Hanham memory cafe welcomes people living with dementia, their carers/family to sit down for a chat or get involved in the activities going on. Fun, often topical activities and talks are organised to help people to enjoy themselves and reminisce. Activities include wordsearches, craft activities and reminiscence sessions.
We’re looking for volunteers to help support the running of the cafe. This will include making attendees feel welcome by chatting to them, encouraging them get involved in the activity and serving refreshments. We will also need help setting up and clearing the room.
Hanham memory cafe takes place on the fourth Tuesday of every month between 18:30 and 20:30pm.
The role will suit you if you:
We’re looking for someone who loves to chat and hear people’s stories. We have regular attendees and new faces attending every month.
Your role will involve supporting people, so they can get involved in the wide range activities. This could involve explaining the instructions or completing the activity together. This will require a bit of patience and adaptability.
You will be working with a small group of volunteers and staff on the day, so we’re looking for someone who can work well in a team.
The impact you’ll make:
You’ll be helping us maintain a vital service for people living with dementia in the local community. Our regular groups allow people to stay connected and feel less isolated. It also gives people the opportunity to share experiences and find support.
Need to know:
To ensure we are running a supportive and quality service we do ask our volunteers to undertake some short learning modules, such as safeguarding. If you feel you would have difficulty completing them we would be happy to adapt the learning to suit you.
The next steps to volunteering with us is to get in touch. We will ask you to complete a registration form and then arrange for you to pop in for a chat with us or attend a taster session. Once we have discussed if this role is right for you we will then contact your references.
We require two references for anyone looking to take up this role.
You will not be required to give personal care to any of the attendees.
