The Global Lounge is a cultural hub which encourages integration of all students – home and international through a vast range of social events and cultural celebrations. It gives students the chance to share experiences, make friends and find out about global opportunities available to them at the University.
About Language Café
Language Café is an informal language learning event, encouraging fun and friendly conversations over a cup of tea. Our café is open once a week during term time. We welcome students and staff of all language levels and none.
Since its launch in November 2019, Language Café has been a success story with a couple of hundred language learners, 85 volunteers and 16 languages, including Arabic, Spanish, Russian, English, German, Korean, Mandarin, British Sign Language, Greek, Portuguese, Japanese, Bulgarian, Tibetan, Hindi, French, and Italian.
During the pandemic we began hosting weekly virtual sessions which proved to be very popular. We are continuing with the virtual Language Café in 2020/2021 until we are safe to run our usual face-to-face gatherings.
Language Café is run by volunteers who are either native or fluent speakers of many wonderful languages. Each week we introduce a new theme such as travel, festive traditions, music, and food so that every time you return you learn something new.
Every language has its own conversation group and where possible we divide groups by the language level from beginner to intermediate+. We tend to keep our conversation groups small so that everyone gets a chance to speak.
Volunteering with us
Volunteering with us is a great way to gain valuable experience, learn new skills, meet new people and help others. You will be given training and support to become a confident volunteer. We will organise fun mingles for you to meet other volunteers. This volunteering opportunity counts towards Bristol Plus Award. This opportunity is open to all University of Bristol students and staff.
The more volunteers, the smaller conversation groups, and the more time to talk! Each language will have its own conversation group. Where possible, we aim to offer different language levels such as Beginner (little to no language skills) and Intermediate+ (able to hold a conversation).
We are recruiting new volunteers to start volunteering with us from February 3, 2021. Since our programme is almost full, we are primarily looking for the native and fluent speakers of English, French, Japanese, German, and Italian. If you are interested, please complete this short application form. For more information about the role see the Role Description. Speakers of all the other languages, including English, are welcome to apply for 2021/2022. Previous teaching experience is helpful but definitely not required.
We will review all the applications and will invite you to our virtual induction to help you prepare for the role. If you have volunteered with us in the past, you do not need to re-apply again.
Please get in touch with us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any queries about the programme or this volunteering opportunity.
Start Date: 03-02-2021
