The ss Great Britain is an award winning museum and heritage site in the heart of Bristol's harbourside. Brunel's ss Great Britain is one of the most important historic ships in the world. When she was launched in 1843, she was called "the greatest experiment since the Creation". By combining size, power and innovative technology Brunel created a ship that changed history. The ss Great Britain Trust now offers thousands of visitors each year the opportunity to experience the sights, smells and sounds of the ship. Visitors can also research the history of passengers in the Brunel Institute, travel back through time in the Dockyard Museum, see Brunel's innovative screwhead propellor under a glass sea and understand the challenges of conserving an historic ship.
Volunteers play a vital role in our work. In return we promise you a valuable, rewarding and unique experience which will genuinely be making a difference. Our volunteering roles include assisting our Education team to deliver inspiring workshops to schoolchildren, costumed roles on board the ship, engaging with visitors to offer a memorable experience and presenting research to the public in the Brunel Institute. We will provide comprehensive training and ongoing support, the opportunity to be part of a vibrant, friendly team, behind the scenes access to our collections and ship and the opportunity to gain valuable work experience.
The purpose of the role is to inspire and engage visitors to the SS Great Britain an award-winning museum and historic ship and Bristol's leading visitor attraction. Costumed Volunteers bring the story of the ship and her passengers to life in an interesting and relevant way.
As a Costumed Interpretation Volunteer you will wear period costume but interact with visitors as yourself. Your role might be a sailor on the weather deck, or a passenger who travelled in steerage, the lowest class of accommodation on board, or even Mr Brunel's chief clerk. There are many ways in which you will bring the history of the ship to life including:
