Action Tutoring is an education charity working in partnership with schools, to support disadvantaged pupils to achieve, through English and maths tuition. Volunteering with us is an easy and rewarding way to make a difference to the lives of young people living in your community. As a volunteer tutors you will be working with pupils in primary and secondary schools across Bristol, increasing their subject knowledge, confidence and study skills.
By volunteering with us for just one hour a week, at a time and a location that suits you, you can help to improve the future prospects of young people in your community, changing their lives and helping to ensure they leave school with the grades needed to build a bright future.
You will be able to use and develop skills, such as time management, interpersonal and communication skills that will also support your studies and will add enhance your CV. You will also be having a direct impact on a young person’s academic attainment – an independent evaluator found that having seven or more sessions with us added the value of up to ½ a GCSE grade to that pupil’s results – and you’ll see these changes first hand.
It’s a great way for you to meet like-minded people and do a bit of networking yourselves, as we recruit volunteers from all backgrounds and of all ages, from 18 to 80, to work with us. Our pupils love getting to know you and your experiences give them a real insight into the wider world.
As a tutor you will attend a specially designed training session to tell you everything you need to know about tutoring. You will also be using structured resources, developed by curriculum specialists, to deliver your tutoring.
Once trained you’ll be able to select a programme in a school and time slot that fits with your schedule. You’ll then be paired with a couple of pupils and be responsible for tutoring them once a week, for a term. There will be a member of the Action Tutoring team on hand every week to support you throughout. We can reimburse your travel expenses up to the value of £5 per session and provide a reference to validate your commitment.
As well as Bristol Action Tutoring also operates across Liverpool, London, Birmingham, Brighton, and Sheffield and we recruit throughout the year. We are looking for tutors who have or are studying for a degree and have an A or B grade A Level, or equivalent, in the subject they wish to tutor.
What would I be doing?
As an English or maths tutor, you will choose one of our partner schools to volunteer in and work with one or two pupils for an hour a week across the course of a school term. Sessions are delivered on the school premises at the same time each week. We provide all of our tutors with training and workbooks to use in sessions, and we will also process a DBS check for you.
Due to the current crisis, we are no longer running face to face programmes however we hope to resume these as soon as it is safe to do so.
We are currently piloting online tutoring over the summer term with a small number of tutors and schools. This will roll out more widely in the Autumn along with an additional in-school year 7 catch-up programme. Online tutoring is a great option for anyone on a busy schedule, less able to get to school locations or continuing to keep their distance from groups of people. Online tutoring also allows us to expand and recruit tutors from outside of our regions.
What will I get out of it?
By volunteering and tutoring for just one hour a week, you will be able to directly support disadvantaged young people to improve their subject knowledge, grow their confidence and help ensure they leave school with the grades needed to build a bright future.
Tutoring is also a great way to gain some valuable work experience, whether you are interested in a career in teaching or just looking to enhance your CV by building your interpersonal, time management and communications skills. Our pupils really enjoy working with people from a wide range of backgrounds and often see our volunteers as role models.
