Self-Certification

If you are unable to sit an exam or assessment on the day you should follow the self-certification process.

This is for in-person and online exams, practical and oral examinations, and multiple-choice question (MCQ) tests that take place on a single day, but not for coursework, timed assessments, or assessments that take place over more than 24 hours.

You will need to self-certify for each assessment that you miss.

There are limits to self-certifying – the process can only be used for assessments within a single period of up to two consecutive days. If you are unwell or unable to sit assessments beyond that you will need to submit ECs and provide evidence.

If you self-certify for an assessment that would have been your first attempt you should be able to take it at the next available opportunity, usually in the summer reassessment period, with the full range of marks available. If you self-certify during the reassessment period then you will need to sit the exam the following academic year, which can delay your progression or graduation as well as have tuition fee implications.

There is University guidance for the process of submitting a self-certification form that explains what you need to do. You don’t need to provide evidence, but make sure that you submit the form by 23:59 (UK time) on the day of the assessment.

If you become unwell during an exam and can’t complete it, you should tell a member of staff as soon as possible. If it is an in-person exam, you should speak to a member of staff straight away. If it is taking place online you should contact your School Office before the exam is due to end. Then you should submit an EC form explaining what happened, and you will need to provide evidence.

If you have any questions then you can speak to us, or your school office. Don’t hesitate to contact us at:
