University of Bristol Ultimate Frisbee

Photos shows a group of 30 Ultimate Frisbee players of mixed gender, posing for a team photo at the end of a tournament. Some are covered in mud, but all have big smiles. They have 2 coaches to their side, and it is a bright sunny day.

About the Sport

Ultimate Frisbee (or 'Ultimate' for short) is rated the #1 BUCS sport you should try at University and is one of the fastest growing sports in the country.

Ultimate is a fast paced, non-contact sport, played with a flying disc. Combining aspects of American Football, Netball, Basketball, Athletics and many other sports along the way. Ultimate can be played Men's, Women's, or Mixed and can be played at any experience level, from a throw about with friends to the World Championships.

About Us

Mythago, our club, is a welcoming and friendly Ultimate club who also compete at the highest levels of University Ultimate. The majority of our members have never played before university so don't worry if you haven't either. We cater for both more relaxed players, looking to have a social time being active, and more competitive players too.

We are an inclusive and diverse group, with our players coming from a range of backgrounds, nationalities and genders. A major element of Ultimate is 'Spirit of the Game', which encompasses fair-mindness, calm communication and a positive and respectful attitude towards players, fans and opponents. As a club, we try to carry this over into our every-day, such as at trainings or socials, to maintain a safe space for everyone.

Training

We have several trainings a week, catering for all experience levels and commitments. For a more relaxed session, we train every Wednesday and Saturday from 14:00-16:00 on the Downs by the Water Tower. These sessions are run by our captains and other experienced members, and anyone is welcome any time of year.

Additionally, we have two coached sessions per week, one on the 3G pitches at Coombe Dingle Sports Complex and the other at the Indoor Sports Centre. The Coombe Dingle session is run by external coaches and offers a more competitive experience, but is still welcome to all. This session is 23/24 is Thursday 17:00-19:00 at Coombe Dingle.

Our Indoors session is by our teams in the run-up to Indoor tournaments, and is invite-only due to the hall capacity limits. For those still wishing to play Indoors, we also have a B:Active partnership session which is free and open to all members of the university to try out Ultimate. This session is also at the Indoor Sports Centre, and Tuesdays 16:00-17:00.

BUCS and Tournaments

As a club we have 2 Men's teams and 1 Women's teams in the BUCS League and we also enter many tournaments throughout the year. These tournaments can be our very own Bristol Beginner's tournament but also BUCS-run, such as Mixed Indoor Regionals to University Men's & Women's Nationals. We enter several teams in our region for Men's, Women's and Mixed, giving you plenty of chance to play competitively at your level of experience.

These tournaments take place over weekends from November-April, and are a brilliant way to get to know your teammates and improve your Ultimate skills. They are also very social, with some players attending just to sideline and support their teammates!

Socials

We also have weekly socials, organised by our social secretaries, which are a great way to get to know your teammates better! We host pub quizzes, karaoke, scavenger hunts and more, with 3 sober socials a term and 2 formals over the year. Our social secretaries work closely with our EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) officers to make sure our socials are fun and accessible for all groups.

Freshers 23/24

If you're interested in having a chat to one of our committee members, find us at the Welcome Fair on Friday 22nd of September. You'll find us in the Sports marquee at stall 299, and any of our members would be happy to tell you more and answer any of your questions.

We'll be running some Give-It-A-Go sessions on the Downs too, if you want to give Ultimate a try! More details will be on the Give-It-A-Go site, but the dates are:

Sat 23rd Sept - 14:00-16:00 on the Downs

Weds 27th Sept - 14:00-16:00 on the Downs

Our Coombe session on Thursday 28th of September will be run with beginners in mind, so if you want a more competitive feel with direction from our coaches, come along too!

Becoming a Member

Hopefully this has given you an insight into Ultimate at Bristol, and you're ready to join the fun! Becoming a member isn't just about getting a coveted Bristol Ultimate sports fleece, but joining a supportive and friendly community who are always keen to throw a disc around.

To join, click on the 'Join this Group' button at the top or bottom of the page!

We offer one standard membership for £45 for all players, covering all annual training and coaching costs, any materials for socials and to help subsidise costs of tournaments. This has recently been updated to reflect the increasing cost of living. An additional £25 is also added, as part of the SEH Access Pass. This helps to fund BUCS events, home and away, and continues to allow our club to use university sports facilities. This pass is universal across all sports at the university, so if you're considering multiple societies, you only have to buy it once!
