Are you interested in learning more about bees, get practical experience in beekeeping, or just want to make delicious honey? As part of a pilot project in collaboration with Bristol University Conservation Group and the Botanic Garden we are offering a free beekeeping course for all students.
Nawbash, who keeps the bees at the Botanic Gardens, will teach a bit of theory, but most will be practical beekeeping. You will follow the bees through the spring and summer, and what needs to be done will depend on the week, but will include moving hives, monitoring bee health, watching wobble dances, removing honey, managing swarms etc!
There will be the option to make lots of different types of honey and to be involved in the Bristol Bee and Pollination festival on the 24th/25th August (there is even tentative talk of Massive Attack judging the honey cake competition)!
The course will run every Wednesday 4.30pm to 6pm starting Wednesday 24th April until the end of July at the University of Bristol Botanic Garden.
You need to be able to attend every week (or almost, so not for students who leave Bristol in May) and not be allergic to bee stings. No prior experience needed, and all equipment will be provided.
If you have any questions or would like to get involved, email me julia.hall.2021@bristol.ac.uk as soon as possible. Please also share widely as this is open to all students
