The Global Lounge, Student Inclusion Team, Multifaith Chaplaincy, Bristol SU Islamic Society and Bristol ABSOC invite you to join us for University of Bristol Open Iftar 2023 – Celebrate and Learn.
The event is open to all University of Bristol Muslim and non-Muslim students and staff. It will be an opportunity to share information and experiences about the significance of the holy month of Ramadan in Islam, exploring traditions held by both Sunni and Shia (Shiite) Muslims during this special time.
The event will begin with insightful presentations from students and invited guests, followed by a call to prayer, after which we will all share a meal together.
To break the fast with our Muslim community, we invite our non-Muslim guests to fast for one day ahead of the event, if you feel that you are able to do so. You can read more about the Rules of Ramadan here.
To show our respect, we will ask all who are not directly participating to please remain silent during prayers.
What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year in Islam. Muslims observe the month of Ramadan by fasting (not eating or drinking during daylight hours) and paying special attention to charity-giving and helping others.
What is iftar?
Iftar is the meal eaten by Muslims after sunset whilst they are fasting for Ramadan (iftar literally means to ‘break fast’). It is the second meal of the day; the pre-dawn meal is called suhur/sehri. Traditionally, in emulation of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, three dates are eaten to break the day’s fast before the meal.
