Gilwern Quarry Fossil Hunt!

We're going on a fossil hunt in mid-Wales to the famous Upper Gilwern Quarry! We will be finding gorgeous trilobites from the species Ogyginus cordensis, a 465 million years old species that used this area as a breeding ground. There's a chance to find other trilobite species too, as well as some graptolites and other invertebrates.

Tickets will come out this Thursday (25th of April) at 6:00 PM. First-come first-serve! As per usual, the tickets on the SU website are free, but getting one means you are committing yourself to pay the £25 in cash on the day of the trip. The trip is a bit more expensive than previous ones, this is due to the quarry being a bit further away than other sites and there being an entry fee to the quarry.

DETAILS:

  • Meet at the usual spot (Merchant Venturer's Building on campus), at 10:00 AM on Sunday 28th April
  • Back in Bristol by 6 PM ish
  • Bring good hiking boots! We'll be in a quarry, so sturdy footwear is super important here
  • Keep an eye on the weather predictions and dress appropriately (waterproofs/sun hat...)
  • Bring bags to store your fossil finds in! And bring your hammer and goggles if you have some; if not, we'll provide that for you.
  • Bring packed lunch, lots of water, and some snacks if you'd like
  • Toilets are available on-site!
