A talk from Professor Mike Benton on the Carnian Pluvial Episode:
"How could a mass extinction be lost or ignored for 30 years? And yet that is just what happened with what is now called the Carnian Pluvial Episode, 234–233 million years ago. This was a hyperthermal crisis, as were so many other mass extinction events, driven by huge volcanic eruptions that led to global warming, acid rain, and ocean acidification and anoxia. There was heavy rainfall, then followed by intense aridity and this was when the extinctions occurred, paving the way for dinosaurs to expand rapidly, as well as many groups of modern plants and animals. The modern world arguably emerged at the same time as the dinosaurs."
