We are running an introductory reading group on the core ideas of effective altruism. It will run for 8 weeks, with about 1 hour of reading per week, and we'll meet up every week for 1 hour to talk about what we've read. However, no worries if you don’t have time to do the reading – please come along anyway! Snacks will be provided, and after each meeting, we might go to the pub! Come along and let's learn how to fix the world!

Effective Altruism (EA) is a project that aims to find the best ways to help others and put them into practice. It is both a research field, which aims to identify the world's most pressing problems and the best solutions to them, and a practical community that aims to use those findings to do good. For example, you can pursue a high-impact career that tackles a pressing global problem, or you can donate to effective charities.
It is a young and exciting global movement that spans a diverse range of causes, skills and interests:
Causes: AI, biosecurity, nuclear war, climate change, animal welfare, global health and development, existential risks, improving institutional decision-making, mental health, improving the long-term future, alternative proteins...
Skills/interests: research, engineering, politics, law, economics, writing, communication, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, social sciences, medicine, software development, cybersecurity, entrepreneurship, community-building, philosophy, morality, rationality, metaphysics, epistemology, design, marketing, operations, longevity, history...
