What are global catastrophic biological risks? How plausible is a pandemic that kills 10% of the human race? What approaches are there to mitigating GCBRs? These are the sorts of questions we’ll be talking about in this 45-minute workshop on bio-risk. We will be discussing various questions in small groups, to hopefully spark some interesting conversations. The purpose of this workshop is to give a taster of the kinds of things we talk about in the Effective Altruism Society.

Effective Altruism (EA) is a project that aims to find the best ways to help others and put them into practice. It is both a research field, which aims to identify the world's most pressing problems and the best solutions to them, and a practical community that aims to use those findings to do good. For example, you can pursue a high-impact career that tackles a pressing global problem, or you can donate to effective charities.
It is a young and exciting global movement that spans a diverse range of causes, skills and interests:
Causes: AI, biosecurity, nuclear war, climate change, animal welfare, global health and development, existential risks, improving institutional decision-making, mental health, improving the long-term future, alternative proteins...
Skills/interests: research, engineering, politics, law, economics, writing, communication, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, social sciences, medicine, software development, cybersecurity, entrepreneurship, community-building, philosophy, morality, rationality, metaphysics, epistemology, design, marketing, operations, longevity, history...
