'Human Rights in Digital Age' Essay Competition

Research For Change together with Lawyers Without Borders invites you to engage in discussion on human rights and the digital era by writing an essay on the topic ‘Human Rights in the Digital Age’.

As technology continues to shape our world at an unprecedented pace, it's imperative to critically examine how these advancements impact our fundamental rights and freedoms.  Your essay could explore the dynamics between technology and human rights, addressing aspects such as privacy, freedom of expression, and the right to information in the digital landscape. You can also consider the implications of surveillance, data collection, and algorithmic decision-making on individual liberties, or analyse the challenges posed by emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, biometrics, and the Internet of Things. You could also examine the emerging challenges in the enforcement of Human Rights.

Engaging with real-world examples, case studies, or personal anecdotes to illustrate your points and making the topic relatable to a broad audience will be well regarded.

We encourage you to present a well-reasoned, evidence-based argument that showcases your understanding of the complexities surrounding human rights in the digital age. Submissions should be between 800-1000 words (excluding footnotes and a bibliography if you choose to provide one). Please submit a comprehensive exploration of the topic while maintaining clarity and conciseness. Please reference your sources using OSCOLA. A bibliography is not essential.

Entry requirements: NONE - we welcome all!

The deadline for submissions is 20/02/2024. The best 3 essays will be published on the RFC Blog (https://www.researchforchangebristol.com/blog) and the best essay will be additionally awarded with an Amazon voucher.
