Election FAQs

As well as providing a comprehensive set of Election Rules (also available in Mandarin) we have answered some of your most frequently asked questions (FAQs). You can see these right here:

How do I vote?

Just visit www.bristolsu.org.uk/vote, login to the portal and rank each candidate in order of who you think should be elected for the role.

Why can’t I vote?

Often there may be technical reasons behind why you're having issues with voting. The following questions might help you understand what the issue is:

  • Have you logged in with your student email details? Click 'Sign In' at the top of the page and sign-in with your university credentials.
  • Are you currently studying at UoB? This is vital for any student wanting to vote
  • Have you checked the portal? There is an Elections Portal you need to access from your account dashboard
  • Did you opt out of student membership? At the start of the year did you decide not to be a member of the Students Union?
  • None of the above? Talk to the Elections team
How does voting work?
  • We use the single transferable vote system
  • Rank candidates in order of your preference
  • Rank as many candidates as you like in each position
  • Don’t think any candidates represent you? Vote RON (Reopen Nominations)

This ranking means that if your preferred choice gets eliminated (by not meeting the threshold for that round) your vote then goes to your next preference. This continues until one person remains.

If you only vote for one person, then your vote stops if/when they are eliminated.

What is RON

The great part about Elections is that you get to decide who best represents you and should work to create change at your SU.

But, what if you don’t like any of the options, or see your own visions for change reflected in any candidate? Well, if this is the case you can choose to vote for  Re-Open Nominations (RON). If this got the most votes we would re-open the entire election process!

What is a manifesto?

You’ll see that most candidates have a description as to why you should vote for them, how they’re qualified for the role, and what their plans are for the Bristol University student experience.  This is a manifesto.

Manifesto’s aim to explain an individual’s idea for making change, and it’s important that you read these as each unique candidate will have a unique set of goals. And, if elected, they will represent and act for you and the whole student body.

Do elections have rules? Who decides them?

This is a Union for all students, so to make sure our elections reflect this there are rules to keep everything fair and positive, so these are elections for a Union for all students. Your Democratic Standards Committee – students like you – help to determine election rules. Your Deputy and Assistant Returning Officers and full-time staff members of the SU make sure to enforce these rules.
