Getting Ready for University

Tuesday 15-08-2023 - 12:25

Your move to university is a fresh start! Bristol may be a whole new city for you to get used to, so, there will be a few key preparations to make so that you can transition smoothly to student life, and enjoy it, from the get-go. But how do you get ready for uni? If that's a question you've asked yourself then take a read through our top tips...

1. Decide What to Pack!👜

You could plan every detail of uni life, but if you don't pack correctly you may be in a bit of trouble...

What to bring to uni is an important decision! You'll need to strike the important balance between not forgetting essentials and not overpacking. Luckily for you, we've created a uni packing checklist to help you with just that. Read it here.

2. Register with a Student Health Service🩺

Registering with a doctor or a student health service is really important, your health should be a priority! It's best to do this sooner rather than later.

The uni has a full NHS GP doctor service, just for you and your families! For some more information about this, and common questions that have been asked by students before, take a look here. You can also see a full list of their health services.

You can register for the student health service right here. You'll just need the postcode of your accommodation.

3. Register to Vote! ✉

You have every right to vote and have your say, and if you have a Bristol address you'll be able to vote in Bristol!

If your home and uni addresses are in two different local authority areas, you can vote in local elections at both, but only in one for general elections.

You can check if you've registered to vote before right here. If you haven't, then you can register to vote here. It only takes a few minutes!

4. Set up a Student Bank Account 💷

Opening a student bank account could be one of the most important things you do before arriving at uni.

Why is that? Well, you'll need a bank account to receive your Maintenance Loan! And, student bank accounts (unlike regular bank accounts) often come with fee and interest-free overdrafts. Pretty handy, right?

If you need some help with where to start looking for an account, and which banks offer what to students, we'd recommend taking a look at:

The uni also has a handy webpage with even more info on student finance and banking. Take a look here!

5. Have a Think About Budgeting ✍

While we're talking about banking, it's worth having a think about your budgeting. Budgeting at uni is an extremely important skill, but we know that it's stressful.

Before you arrive, try and think about what's a realistic budget for you. For example, how much of your maintenance loan covers your accommodation, food, transportation, and other essential expenses?

Bristol is a great place to find student discounts, so you'll be able to explore what's available in the city once you're here! You can also use discount cards to make your budget stretch that bit further. For example, you can order or download your TOTUM discount card and 16-25 Railcard before you even arrive.

6. Update Your Electrical Devices 💻

Your laptop and other electrical devices will be your trusty companions throughout your degree, as we're sure they are already.

Before the term starts, you should take a look at updating the devices you plan to bring to uni - to ensure they can handle any demands that you're course might have. This will save you from future problems or stress caused by slow or outdated tech.

Another tip is to make sure you have essential software installed, such as Word or other note-taking software. This will help you every step of the way, especially if you're someone who prefers to work online!

6. Stay in the Loop and Keep Connected🔌

This September is all about creating, memories, finding your people, and discovering all Bristol has to offer. This can start today, by staying connected!

Also, make sure to check your university email (once you've got it) and your email for the time being. Important updates, announcements, and information specific to your course will be shared with you from now until the start of the term.

It's also a great idea to join official university-related Facebook groups and groups on other social media platforms that are specific to your course, accommodation, or interest and stay updated. Online groups are an excellent way to connect with other new students, get advice from current students, and stay informed about what will be going on in your first few weeks at uni.
