Trans Students’ Guide to Bristol

Thursday 17-08-2023 - 15:57

Moving to a new city may seem daunting, but it can be exciting at the same time! Bristol is a vibrant city that celebrates an incredibly diverse population. In our city and among the student body, the trans community flourishes.

Annually, we have Trans Pride South West which takes place in Bristol to celebrate those from the transgender, non-binary, Intersex, & gender non-confirming individuals community. This takes place in addition to the numerous pride events that typically run throughout June and July. Throughout the year, there are also many LGBTQ+ club nights, socials, and other events that take place in the city.

We have been working with the Trans Students’ Network to help make your life easier when you move to Bristol. They have selected some of their favourite hairdressers, local organisations, and groups that you can get involved in within Bristol. Take a look!

✨Hairdressers

Shotgun

Located in both Cotham, and the Bearpit, Shotgun charge by length, not gender. They are a very trans-friendly establishment, for both transfems and transmascs.

Dooo Hub

Dooo Hub is situated in Bedminster and also charges by length. They are run by queer and trans individuals. Kane, in particular, comes highly rated!

✨Local Organisations

Bristol has a lot of local organisations and a lot are very active. Here is a selection the Trans Student Network has picked out just for you:

Bristol Ballroom Community - Host ballroom events and sessions regularly.

Dandelion DIY- A harm reduction organisation for people DIY-ing HRT.

Missoteque - Host queer club nights, aimed mostly at sapphics but all trans people are welcome.

Queer Climb Bristol - Meet twice monthly at a variety of climbing centres in Bristol.

Queer Cycling Bristol - Social queer bike rides around Bristol and beyond.

Queer Hiking Bristol - Casual hikes which take place every month (ish).

Serving - A non-profit supper club; all proceeds go towards gender-affirming care.

Trans Aid Bristol - A mutual aid style organisation. They provide support for transgender, non-binary, and intersex people in Bristol and the surrounding areas.

Trans Liberation Front Bristol - A direct action group that supports trans, intersex, and GNC people.

The Trans Student Network is also hosting its own network meet-up during Welcome Week on 20 September 2023. This is a wonderful chance to meet other like-minded students and make some new friends. No matter who you are or where you're from, there are groups here for you. This event is for students who self-identify as trans.

If you didn’t know, we also have an LGBTQ+ Network Meet-up on 19 September 2023 in the Anson Rooms! So, if you'd like, you can come along to that too!🏳‍🌈
