Black History Month

This October we're collaborating with the Black Students' Network to celebrate Black History Month. Bristol is a diverse city and it is important that we provide opportunities to promote knowledge, and learn about, Black History and experience. We also want to continue celebrating Black joy and community.

Throughout the month, we will be hosting a range of different events with the Black Students Network. As part of this series, we'll be exploring the History of Reggae Music with a panel consisting of Ujima Radio, Troy and J Ellis - family members of Alton Ellis - and Lixen Khan! We'll even be holding an open mic for you to share songs or performance poetry. We have a variety of events for you to get involved in, each providing a supportive and educational environment as you continue to build your community post-Welcome Week. See below to find out what events we have planned!

Who are the Black Students' Network?

The Black Students’ Network (BSN) is a platform that aims to promote the unity of Black students on Campus by essentially building the largest possible black “Network.” Their primary goal is to ensure all black students in the university feel a robust sense of belonging throughout the academic year.

Follow them over on Instagram to hear about upcoming events and meet-ups @bsnbristol, and find out more about the Network on their webpage here.

Beyond Black History Month

We want Black History Month to be an opportunity for students to create lasting connections and to further educate themselves about Black History. Beyond this, we're proud to collaborate with a number of student groups and networks throughout the academic year to host a range of events that celebrate Black culture and community. These events range from educational panels to performances. Don't forget to keep an eye out on our 'What's On' page to find out what events we have planned during and after October.

This year, we are also supporting the University of Bristol's 'Global Lounge' in their Beyond Black History series. This year-long series of events, beginning during Black History Month 2023, aims to begin the process of shifting our focus from occasional events, often centered around food, fashion, and music, to interrogate the presence and contributions of Black people in the UK more deeply and systematically.
