Tree planting in the UK is failing to achieve targets prescribed by the UK Government. This has dire implications for both our Net-Zero ambitions and nature.
Come and join a fascinating conversation with Ben Moss of Chew Valley Plants Trees and John Chew of Avon Needs Trees and hear about what the failure to meet tree planting targets means, how we are responding to this challenge locally, and what YOU can do to help.
Along the way, we’ll explore the wonder of trees, how planting and keeping them alive isn't quite as straightforward as you'd hope, and what implications carbon-offsetting has for planting new woodlands and forests.
About the speakers
Ben Moss
Ben is a founder member of Chew Valley Plants Trees, who seek to double the tree cover in the Chew Valley by 2030. Ben had the privileged opportunity to buy some land in the Chew Valley in 2014, following moving to Bristol in 2003 and co-founding Bristol Wood Recycling Project. Ben's land has had thousands of trees planted on it - but not enough to meet the scale of what is needed locally and nationally!
John Chew
John has been a trustee of Avon Needs Trees almost since its inception in 2019. He has seen the charity grow from a small group of enthusiatic people, to an organisation that is making an impact in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss. He has always been passionate about the environment and, in particular, reconnecting young people and adults with nature. He is most often to be found in the 'field', leading groups of volunteers, running forest schools or studying the flora and fauna of the Chew Valley.
Chair: Kate Miller, Deputy Director of Civic Engagement at the University of Bristol.
Kate has a passion for all things sustainability and volunteering, and will explain how staff can use their ‘Days to Make a Difference’ volunteering days to get hands on with tree planting.
Earth Justice Society will also be at the event, supporting students to sign up for tree planting volunteer sessions. The Society will then help students to coordinate travel plans to and from the most popular sessions.
