Chaos

The University of Bristol's Award-Winning Physics Society

Our website: bristolchaos.com

Welcome to Chaos! We are a community for all those at Bristol studying - or just interested in - physics by providing top quality, year-round events. Our 700+ members enjoy unforgettable socials, academic talks, and international and national trips. As one of the university's largest departmental societies we also help facilitate academic learning by providing careers talks, access to partner companies, upskilling sessions, and a range of networks (women's LGBTQ+ and BME). From social events to academic help, we aim to give our members what they need to get the most out of their time at Bristol.

We are very proud to have recently won the Committee Excellence Award at the National Society and Volunteering Awards 2020, as well as Best Society at the National Societies Awards 2019 and Best Academic and Careers Society at the NSA 2018. We are also a Top 10 society nationally for employability and careers.

Socials and Trips

From our iconic Freshers' Bar Crawl to the idyllic end-of-year barbeque in our own physics garden, Chaos hosts incredible social events throughout the year. Whether or not drinking is your thing, we have socials suited for every student: from pub quizzes to scavenger hunts, lasertag to astronomy viewings, karaoke to bowling... Our flagship formal event - Physball - sells out all 300 tickets in seconds.

First year students can sign up to join up with physics 'parents' in our Freshers family scheme. These are older students with similar interests who can advise about studying physics, getting to know life at uni, or just where to find the best pubs!

Chaos has travelled far and wide to find the coolest physics experiences, recently visiting Paris. In previous years, we've visited the fusion reactor at JET, CERN, Prague, the new nuclear reactor at Hinkley Point... the list is endless! This year we plan on making the most of the UK's science sites by organising term-time day trips, as well as an end-of-year international trip!

Talks

Chaos has a history of hosting unparalleled talks from industry and academic leaders on topics in research and popular science. Previous speakers include Sir Michael Berry, Dr Michael Cuthbert, and Professor Freya Blekman. This year promises to be no exception to our reputation! Our Talks Rep, William Stafford, is busy arranging an incredible lineup of speakers for the new academic year - watch this space!

Physbar

Chaos runs its very own coffee shop right here in the Physics Department, serving tea, hot chocolate, iced drinks, snacks and, of course, coffee. Physbar is open from 1-2pm every weekday, serving some of the cheapest drinks in Bristol. Our friendly volunteers can’t wait to see you there! Bring along a keep cup and enjoy alternative milk at no extra cost.

Membership Benefits

Chaos members get free or discounted entry to all Chaos events, as well as earlybird ticket sales. Most importantly, membership is only £7 for a year, so don't hesitate in joining up! You can join by clicking the 'Join This Group' button on the top/bottom of this webpage.

Networks

Chaos has set up BME, LGBTQ+, and Women’s networks to help promote diversity within the society. These networks have Whatsapp groups students can request to join by emailing network chairs below. The networks put on events specific to their communities throughout the year, including social gatherings and talks from appropriate speakers.
