Academic Talk

In most courses we are first presented with a new definition before we explore theorems using that definition. But how did the mathematical community come up with such a definition? While lectures try to give insight into how one can come up with a proof - they often don't have the space to explore how and/or why we have certain definitions.
In this talk, I will give a brief history of Group Theory: We will explore what questions/problems mathematicians were working; what group theory results were found before the idea of group theory came about; and the different iteration of the definition of a group.
No pre-knowledge of Group Theory, or even what a Group is, will be required for this talk.
