At Bristol SU, we want to make sure that you have all the information you need to feel empowered to stand as a candidate in our elections.

How do we support candidates?

We’ve got lots of Candidate Academy sessions happening across the nomination period, so if you want to know more detail, or understand more about the process, then come along!

Can’t make a session? No worries! All the slides will be uploaded into the Candidate SharePoint along with other useful resources and information.

I’ve never done this before, will I get any help if I run in the election?

We also have an amazing Elections team that will be running morning briefings about voting statistics, along with a hub where you can come and take a breather – with snacks! If you’re running for a Full-time Officer role, you’ll be automatically assigned an SU staff mentor, who is there to give you some emotional support and guidance across voting week.

We also have our Candidate Academy Sessions and Sharepoint for the more technical bits around your personal statement and how to run a campaign.  

I’m an international student, can I run in the election?

Over the years, plenty of international students have stood in, and won, elections. However, it is your responsibility to check if you are eligible to work and volunteer the hours required as per your visa. If you require more details about your rights or what action to take, please contact the University of Bristol International Student Office.

Voting is when I have a deadline, can I get an extension?

If you are running for a full-time Officer role, and have a coursework deadline in the week of the elections (9-12 March), then if necessary, this will normally be deemed an acceptable reason for a short extension of up to seven days. Please liaise with your school in advance about this and you can fill out the form here.
