Your role as part of the Democratic Standards Committee (DSC) is to ensure that the Union’s democracy is open, transparent, and adheres to the letter and spirit of the Byelaws – the very rules of your SU!

You’re there to make sure that it works for all voting members of Student Council, and beyond. You’ll help with the process of ensuring fair elections and referenda. You’ll help give recommendations in Student Councils and Union’s Annual Members Meetings that are fair and in the spirit of our rules.

You’ll help set out agenda and work hard with our Student Council Chair and Union Affairs Officer to make student democracy as exciting as possible to engage with.

  •  Meets monthly to discuss and assign ideas proposed by students to the appropriate democratic 
    avenue
  • Meets before Student Council and Annual Members’ Meeting to set the Agenda for the democratic 
    meetings
  • Scrutinises and ensures the fair operation of Union meetings, referenda and elections
  • Recommends sanctions to Student Council if they believe standards have been breached
  • Supports the Chair during Democratic Meetings in decisions regarding referenda, amendments, etc.
  • Attends Student Representatives Assembly and holds the Full-Time Officer team to account in that 
    space

Time Commitment

Week to week, the time commitment will vary for these roles.

Some weeks, there will be mandatory meetings and beyond that it is up to the student about how much time they want to commit to the role. For Democratic Standards Committee, we estimate it is about 10-15 hours a term.

The position runs from October 2025 – June 2026.
