A comment on Fossil Free Careers from your Student Living Officer, Izzy Russell.
"Bristol Students' Union was the first SU in the UK to vote for the Fossil Free Careers motion. This was two years ago, and seven universities in the UK have since banned the promotion of these unsustainable and unethical careers. The University of Bristol is still lagging, despite students voting and campaigning for them to be better.
"Carla Denyer, Co-Leader of the Green Party, has now endorsed the Fossil Free Careers campaign. We're thrilled to have her support and hope that this means university management come back to the table and listen to their students. She was instrumental in the divestment of unsustainable banking at the university; next, we need oil, gas and mining recruiters off our campus for good.
"Here at Bristol, we are currently 16th on the People and Planet university rankings. Our careers policies are the main areas in which we are far behind; the University still actively promote careers in companies such as Shell and BAE systems. At both the University and the SU, we announced a climate emergency 5 years ago, but what have we done since? What practical actions have we put in place? Stopping the promotion of such unsustainable companies would be a huge win in the right direction - for the planet, our students, and our university.
"The campaign has recently been officially relaunched, in collaboration with People and Planet, and Earth Justice Society. Follow @fossilfreecareers.uob on Instagram for updates and ways to get involved!"
