Now in its third year, Take a Plate is Bristol SU’s reuse initiative is helping students settle in sustainably, by redistributing thousands of donated kitchen items to new and returning students.
From plates and pans to utensils and more, over 2,000 items found new homes with 370 students attending, reducing waste and supporting those arriving with limited luggage or tight budgets.
Your Student Living Officer Lucy Pears (above), who’s supported the scheme since day one, said:
“Take a Plate was the first event I ran in my role, and it set the tone for what student support can look like. Many recycling schemes can’t accept kitchenware, so this fills a vital gap. It’s practical, sustainable, and especially helpful for international students arriving from abroad.”
Munji, a Business Analytics student from India also shared:
“It’s such a good concept. I’ve struggled to cook properly since arriving, and this event helped me get the last few things I needed.”
By collecting and redistributing items that would otherwise go to landfill, Take a Plate continues to lead on sustainability and student wellbeing, making move-in easier, greener, and more affordable.
