Welcome to Big Band Soc.
We're a group of students who have a passion for all things jazz, and meet every Friday evening for chilled out rehearsals, interspersed with breaks to grab a beer, have a good chat and start the weekend on a relaxing, jazzy note.
Big Band Soc places an emphasis on community, making sure we create an inclusive, welcoming and supportive space each week for everyone to come together, enjoy eachother's company, and create great music. We organise a variety of socials throughout the term, from pub sardines and nature walks to laser tag and kareoke, we make the most of what Bristol has to offer.
Our two incredible bands feature the most talented musicians in the university, and we regularly play gigs throughout the city. We are available for hire to all student societies, external organisations and private groups - if you know someone who needs a big band to bring the party vibes, reach out! About us
Big Band Society consists of two student-led bands; one fully auditioned (Hornstars) and one largely un-auditioned (BUJO). Both rehearse every Friday from 5:30pm-7:30pm and perform regularly both within the university and more widely across popular Bristol venues.
We play a wide variety of repertoire; from traditional Big Band music to more modern Jazz, Funk, Soul, and Disco. We are also a very social society with big socials held every two weeks and nights-out to local Jams occurring frequently and often.
In addition to this, we also run an annual European tour in the Summer which is open to all members. Membership is free and all are welcome so if you play an instrument or are keen to learn there really is no reason not to sign up below!
Our Bands
Hornstars (H*) (Fully Auditioned)

Hornstars is our fully auditioned band. Rehearsing in the Stephenson Room at the SU this band is smaller but tends to take on more challenging repertoire and consistently delivers some of the best big band performances in Bristol and the surrounding area. Highlights of this year have included supporting Cut Capers at the Trinity Centre during their UK Tour (which culminated in their Glastonbury performance) and our sold-out Clusterfunk gig at the Bristol Beacon.

Bristol University Jazz Orchestra (BUJO) (largely un-auditioned)

BUJO is our larger band. The rhythm section and singers are auditioned but aside from that no audition is necessary - just turn up! We rehearse in the Carpenter Room every Friday. While BUJO’s rehearsals may be a little more relaxed than Hornstars’, the quality of music is certainly no less and the band has achieved a lot this year. Most notably being crowned the winners of the South West Battle of the Big Bands in Plymouth.
While a little band rivalry can be motivating, we are ultimately one big Big Band family. We celebrate this every week by coming together after rehearsal for a drink down in the Balloon Bar.

Membership Fee Inclusions
Prior to signing up to a Club or Society speak to the Committee to find out what your membership includes and if there are any further expenses throughout the year.
Service Standards
All Club or Society members can expect to receive:
- The opportunity to attend regular meetings, events, activities, trips and socials as arranged.
- The opportunity to stand for a committee position or vote in their elections (Bristol students only).
- For Sports Club – to attend regular training sessions and have the opportunity to be selected for the teams.
Code of Conduct
When joining a club or society you are agreeing to abide by the constitution, general rules, regulations and policies of University of Bristol Students’ Union and also the Club or Society Code of Conduct which sets out the level of behaviour & discipline expected of all Club & Society members.
Refund Policy
Any customer who pays for a membership subscription to a Bristol SU Society, Sports Club, Student Media and initiatives has a 14 day cooling off period from the time and date of purchase during which they have the right to cancel the subscription and receive a full refund. If you do decide to cancel within the 14 days, Bristol SU will refund your payment within a further 30 days of the cancellation. To request a refund please email: bristolsu@bristol.ac.uk
Data sharing (Sports Club members only)
Please be aware that Bristol SU may share data relating to the members of its sports clubs with the Centre for Sport, Exercise and Health (a department of the University). This information may be used for the purposes of communicating direct with these members and/or to cross-reference against SEH's Sports Pass membership records.
As part of Bristol SU's membership of British Universities & Colleges Sports (BUCS) Bristol SU may have to share data on to its sports clubs members so BUCS can, from time to time, communicate with these members.

If you're joining one of the societies listed below please be aware that your name and email address will be shared with Bristol Hub for the purpose of keeping you up to date with their activities through their email “The Week”:
