Welcome to the Black Engineers Society (BES)!

BACKGROUND

The Black Engineers Society is a dynamic and inclusive society dedicated to fostering a supportive environment for students of Black Heritage interested in engineering and related fields.

 

AIMS

Facilitate career-building opportunities: BES aims to provide a platform for students to connect with industry professionals, potential employers, and alumni.

Offer professional development resources: Organise workshops, and training sessions on topics including resume building, interview preparation, and technical skills enhancement.

Foster a culture of continuous learning: BES believes in continuous growth and development by exposing our members to opportunities, and encouraging professional enrichment.

Promote equality and inclusions: Address the systemic barriers and biases that hinder the progress of Black engineering students.

STRATEGY

At BES, our strategy is centered around empowering students in engineering and STEM fields through impactful outreach, engaging social events, and informative seminars.

1. Local Outreach Activities

We recognize the importance of representation in engineering and STEM. To actively encourage students within the Global Majority to consider engineering as a viable career path, we will organize local outreach activities. These activities will involve inviting students to the university, providing them the opportunity to witness engineering demonstrations. These demonstrations will not only highlight the exciting aspects of engineering but also offer insights into life as an engineering student. 

 

2. Inspirational Talks by Black Engineers

 

Throughout the academic year, we intend to host sessions featuring accomplished Black engineers who have made significant contributions to the field. These professionals will share their personal journeys, challenges, and triumphs, providing valuable insights into the essence of being an engineer. By connecting our members with successful role models, we aim to instill a sense of possibility and purpose.

 

3. Career Seminars

Navigating the transition from university to the professional world can be overwhelming. To address this, we plan to organize seminars that provide practical guidance on securing internships and gaining hands-on experience. We will collaborate with industry experts, career counselors, and alumni to deliver informative workshops on resume building, interview preparation, and networking strategies. 

4. Presence at Open Day Events

To further our mission of encouraging Black Heritage students to pursue engineering and STEM, we will actively participate in open day events. These occasions offer a prime opportunity to engage with prospective students. By sharing our experiences, showcasing our society's initiatives, and addressing any concerns, we aim to create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that motivates students to choose STEM.

5. Socials

Building a strong community is essential. We will host a variety of social events, from mixers to themed gatherings. These events will provide an opportunity for our members to connect on a personal level, fostering friendships and a supportive network within the society.

Membership is open to all students, regardless of background or discipline.

Our free membership is designed to eliminate barriers to entry, ensuring that every interested student has the opportunity to be part of BES.
