FAQs:

How much is membership?

Membership is entirely free! Just sign up on our Bristol SU page (it will say £0 when you checkout). Some social events may have a small one-off fee as needed.

What can I expect as a volunteer?

The main role of our volunteers is to visit secondary schools in the Bristol area that have requested our help and provide informal, informative and fun SRE (Sex and Relationship Education) sessions for the students. We tailor our lessons to the age of the students, which can range from 11-18. We typically have 4-6 volunteers per school visit and teach a few 45min-1hr sessions over the course of a morning or afternoon. The topics we teach include: Bodily Changes, STIs and Contraception, Sex and Consent, Relationships and Abuse, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Sex and the Media.

Will I need to travel?

Yes, but we travel to local secondary schools in the Bristol area (accessible by bus from Clifton campus/city centre), you can travel as a group with the other volunteers and your travel expenses will be fully covered by Sexpression.

Will I receive training?

Yes! Volunteers attend a compulsory training session annually (as well as child protection training), after which they can sign up to teach and volunteer at as many school sessions as they like! These training sessions will take place sometime in October. You will receive additional training and guidance for specific school visits once they have been organised.

Do I need a DBS check to teach?

No, not necessarily. We require that all volunteers apply for a DBS check prior to attending a school visit. However, as we have a teacher from the school with us in the room at all times, you don’t actually need your DBS certificate to have arrived to volunteer with us.

Do I need to teach alone?

No - every session is taught by at least 2 volunteers so you’ll never be teaching alone. This ensures the safety of the students and our volunteers. We will try our best to pair you with a more experienced volunteer for your first few sessions so that you can feel more comfortable, prepared and supported.

How much do I need to teach?

As much as you like! There is no set requirement of teaching hours per volunteer to be a member, so you can fit it around your studies and other commitments - but obviously we would like people to be as involved as possible!

Where do I sign up for teaching the lessons?

After attending our Training Day you will be added to a WhatsApp group where lesson schedules are published.

What if I don't want to teach?

We would love more people to get involved so that we can go into even more schools to teach even more children and young adults. However, if teaching isn't your thing, we run a number of advocacy and social events throughout the year. In the past, these have included movie screenings, fundraising for world AIDS day, a vulva clay moulding workshop with the women's network, and the reclaim the night march for victims of sexual assault.

Make sure to become a group member on this page to be added to the mailing list to be notified of our events!

Where can I find out more?
