Join us for our guest speakers night with final two talks of the year from Dr Andrew Knight (veteriary professor of animal welfare) and Dr Alice Brough (pig veternarian, whistleblower and campaigner). 🐷 The evening will run as:
6:30pm - 7:30pm Dr Andrew Knight - High Impact Careers in Animal Advocacy 🐄
Most of us want to advance animal welfare. Traditionally, that has usually meant doing a good job in clinical practice. Recently however, much higher impact pathways have become available for veterinarians seeking to maximise their positive impacts for animals. The presenter started as a vet student campaigning against curricular animal killing, then became a small animal vet, and later progressed to become one of the most active veterinary animal advocates globally. This presentation shares his story, including some of the ultra-high impact animal advocacy projects he’s worked on. It includes a set of slides from his animal advocacy adventures in the Caribbean and other exotic locations. He hopes this will convince you all to become professional animal advocates. Career choices in animal welfare and advocacy will be discussed, and veterinary specialist pathways in animal welfare will be reviewed. Attendees will gain an understanding of the very high impact animal advocacy pathways that have recently become available to veterinarians.
Whilst a Western Australian veterinary student in 2000, Andrew Knight caused great controversy by refusing to kill animals during his surgical and preclinical training. Instead, he helped establish a humane surgical training program, based partly on neutering homeless animals from animal shelters. Since then he’s had a particularly interesting career. Andrew is a now Veterinary Professor of Animal Welfare affiliated with three universities, including the same veterinary school that nearly expelled him as a student. He is an internationally accredited veterinary specialist in animal welfare; a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, and a Principal Fellow of Advance HE. He has many publications, websites, and social media videos on animal welfare issues, which have attracted numerous awards. He edited the Routledge Handbook of Animal Welfare (2023). This summarises all main animal welfare issues, and key animal law in all major world regions. It’s available fully open access viawww.aknight.info/aw-book.
