Hill Walking – Climbing – Mountaineering

We cater for anyone with an interest in the outdoors by running regular weekend trips, giving free climbing instruction, organising adventurous summer trips abroad, and offering subsidised training opportunities. We focus our weekend trips on hiking, scrambling, climbing, and mountaineering in the UK’s beautiful mountainous regions. Over New Year, we run an exciting week-long winter mountaineering trip to Scotland. When you aren’t on the mountain, we have regular socials, plus development opportunities such as first aid and navigation training.

We aim to develop our members’ passion for the outdoors and support them as safe and independent mountaineers whilst, of course, providing maximum fun!

Your annual UBES membership allows you to:

  • Sign up for weekend trips and our Scotland trip
  • Get introductory climbing instruction

More information

Affordable adventures

We are committed to helping everyone get involved, so we strive to be as affordable and inclusive as possible. For £21 per year, our members receive a great discount at selected local outdoor shops and can borrow equipment from our comprehensive stores. We are also keen to support our members applying for Activity Hardship Fund grants of up to £200 per year. Even better, we’re completely non-profit, so are one of the best value ways of getting into the great outdoors.

International expeditions

We run up to three international expeditions a year and expect at least one to focus on exploration or research. Experienced committee members run our expeditions, so they have a clear purpose, and keep costs down where possible. Many members also get together every summer in the Alps for even more adventures.

World-class training and development

Members looking to develop their skills further can apply for a grant towards an accredited Mountain Leader or Rock Climbing Instructor training course. We are serious about making sure our new members have the best support; our most experienced hands are trained to the world-class UK standards for leadership in the mountains and support several of our members every year in applying for a place on a Jonathan Conville Mountaineering Trust Alpine Course. Our summer opportunities also include subsidised introductory level courses in navigation, leadership and climbing - excellent chances to gain these skills and build confidence.

UBMC and UBES are Bristol Uni's two mountaineering clubs, each with slightly different focuses. UBES engages in activities such as hillwalking, scrambling, rock climbing, and winter mountaineering, with the majority of our trips being hiking and scrambling - oriented. UBMC also does scrambling and winter mountaineering, but the main focus of the club (and therefore the purpose of their weekend trips) is rock climbing. Outside of the outdoor focus of weekend trips UBMC have a strong focus on climbing training and competitions, and both societies run multiple weekly climbing sessions, as well as climbing outdoors locally in Bristol. You don't have to choose, though! Plenty of people join both societies. UBES is better though, of course ;)
