This course is designed to allow you to learn some basic techniques of working with clay, by hand-building rather than using the advanced techniques of ‘throwing’ on the potter's wheel.  You will also gain an understanding of how to use the studio and materials for making and decorating your work independently, successfully and safely.

While the techniques learnt each week are prescribed, the design and function of your pots are always up to you.  So please consider doing a little 'homework' by looking at different types of pots in shops, museums and on the Internet to get ideas.  Consider your needs, such as making something to serve crisps and dips in, to grow herbs in, to put a bar of soap on, to decorate a garden wall with, etc.  This is an opportunity to make a stock of presents, too!

Topics Covered:
  • Clay and glaze technology
  • Materials and techniques of texturing and decorating
  • Health and safety.
  • Make a slab dish and slab cylinder.
  • Demonstration of making decorations and tea lights.
  • Techniques of decorating with coloured slip.
  • Make a slip-decorated tile and coiled pot.
  • Method of glazing.
  • Glaze the slab dish and cylinder.

  • Glaze tile and coiled pot.
  • Design Project - design and make a slab-formed item such as a sign, relief plaque, mirror frame, soap dish, wall pocket, box, etc.
