The 93 Percent Club: UoB's State School Society

  • Screen shot 2016 11 06 at 14.01.47

Description

WHO WE ARE

93% of secondary school students across the UK attend state schools. Yet, at the University of Bristol, we account for just 66% of the intake.
Coming to a top university from a state school education can be quite daunting and, more often than not, it can be difficult to find people with life experiences that are similar to your own - sometimes leading to a feeling of alienation.

This group wants to help break down the divide between state and private schools and ensure that students from disadvantaged educational backgrounds have the same positive experience at UoB. This group was created in response to the expressed need to voice the experiences and opinions of state school students (in the UK and internationally) that have come to UoB and feel that they have done so through educational disadvantage.

EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

  • Regular socials to meet other like-minded students.
  • Access to hear from speakers, journalists and academics about Widening Participation.
  • Networking and career related events e.g. LinkedIn photoshoots and CV workshops.
  • Outreach and volunteering opportunities at state schools in Bristol.
  • Academic and confidence building workshops for 93% Club members.
  • A mentoring scheme with industry professionals within Bristol!

AIMS

  • To PROVIDE A SPACE for UoB students from disadvantaged educational backgrounds where they can share experiences, opinions, concerns and useful social and educational resources.
  • To UPSKILL, INSPIRE AND EMPOWER state educated and under represented students into top sectors and industries upon graduation.
  • Act as a LIASON between our members and the University of Bristol, to ensure an equal experience for all students with a focus on student wellbeing, confidence, employability, finance and housing.
  • Encourage more COMMUNICATION with privately educated peers, the Students Union and other UK Universities, surrounding different levels of educational, geographical and social inequality.
  • To work with the WIDER Bristol community to provide academic support through outreach programs, mentoring schemes and more.
