Welcome to the UoB Liberty Society!

Who are we?

The UoB Liberty Society promotes liberalism (in all of its forms) among UoB students and beyond. We advocate for freedom and choice; and against authoratarianism and oppression. There are two maxims central to our philosophy:

  • To each their own- Every individual knows what is best for them and should possess the freedom to make their own choices and choose their actions accordingly, so long as they do not restrict or interfere with the liberties of others.
  • For the betterment of society- We believe that through free and open society and the necessary structures for its maintenance, the problems of disease, poverty, global warming, and other global issues could be solved.

The society is not affiliated with any organisation, political or otherwise.

Events and activities

We host term time activities to build a better understanding of the principles of free societies and how to live you best, happiest life but most importantly, we provide education and entertainment to the students and residents in Bristol. These include:

  1. Socials where members get together, converse on matters concerning liberty, get to know fellow like-minded students, and network. These alternate between discussion groups lightly moderated by the committee and more casual socials centred around food/drink.
  2. External speaker events. Whilst we host many liberty oreiented speakers discussing and presenting the aforementioned ideas, we will also organise events that examine the existence (or co-existence) of these ideas within other spheres, for example an exploration of liberty within religion through discussion/lectures with religious leaders, alongside cooperation with fellow relevant societies.
  3. Periodic newsletters are sent out to all our members. Our newsletters include some general formalities and updates but more excitingly, internal, and external career/personal development opportunities as we have ties with think tanks and organisations domestically and globally.

Why join?

Membership grants access to all of our resources (social, physical, intellectual...). These include free access to events and subscription to our newsletter, which provide exciting opportunities to meet likeminded individuals at our university and beyond. You will also receive free books and resources on numerous topics (these are in English by default but can be provided in other languages).

The advancement of our members' status is highly important as our society is not only a fun and accepting outlet for the free exchange of ideas, but also a platform to network, and grow.

Members often recieve the opportunity and funding to attend events all over the world. Last year we flew members to a conference in the US, all expenses paid; provided free entry to several conferences and events in the UK and europe; and gave away thousands of pounds worth of books and resources.

Who can join?

The ideas of liberty are not inherent to any skin colour, sex, ethnicity, religion, ability, sexual orientation, age... We welcome anyone who values liberty or wants to learn more about these ideas.
