The U1 is the main bus that all students use. Especially for new students who don't know the area well yet. It is also the main bus that new students get a bus pass to.
For city center students, they don't manage to use their bus pass because the U1 doesn't go to city center untill 11am. This is inconveniencing as most students will be having 9am classes and have to walk up St Michael's or Park Street to get to class on time and yet they have a bus pass. It's not really fair to them. For new students who don't know their way around yet and also students with walking issues or chronic pain this is impossible and you now get forced to take other buses and have to spend extra money.
The U1 should be getting to city center in time for students to use it to get to their classes.

The uni is stopping giving out the bus passes for first years from 2026. For students with walking issues or chronic pain there ought to be more support on making a DSA application, as DSA will cover taxis.
The uni doesn't control the U1 anymore - its commercially operated by First Bus. For the uni to have control over it, it would have to go back to supporting it again.
