Student Council & Forum

This is your chance to make your voice heard and learn more about democracy at Bristol SU!

The last Student Council of the year will happen on 16 April 2026 between 17:00 and 19:00 in the Anson Rooms of the Richmond Building. Please arrive from 16:30 to help make the sign-in process as smooth as possible!

Student Council is the main representative forum of the Students' Union. It creates policy which directs the focus for our team of seven SU officers. Members discuss and vote on items (called motions) submitted by students. Any motions that pass become active SU policy for three years.

All students can submit Ideas to become motions and attend the meeting, but only course reps, faculty reps, student community organisers, society presidents, volunteering project co-ordinators, or club captains can vote on motions. Find out more on the democratic events page.

This Student Council will be a hybrid: half regular democratic event and half Council Forum! Learn more about both structures below!

About Student Council

Ahead of Student COuncil students can put forward Ideas and suggestions, designed to improve students' lives. These then get discussed by our Demcoratic Standards Committee and allocated - those that get allocated to Student Council become motions. All Bristol students can then attend Student Council to watch the debates and see which motions have been voted in (passed).

In previous Student Councils, students have passed policy to better support pregnant students, to support the climate strike campaign, and to adopt a harm reduction approach to drugs and alcohol. This is your chance to make long-lasting and far-reaching change at Bristol.

We have 1 motion coming to this Student Council:

  1. Rent Review - Epigram's Break the Mould Campaign

If you wish to submit an amendment for this motion, you can do so by emailing us. The amendments window is open until Wednesday 08 April at 12pm.

Please get in touch with any questions: email our Democracy inbox or our Democracy & Campaigns Coordinator.

About Student Council Forum

One of our student committees, Student Representatives Assembly, has met and chosen 5 topics to focus on:

  • Activism on campus
  • Assessments
  • Renting / Student Living
  • Societies
  • Safety

During the Forum portion of the meeting there will be 5 tables set up, each covering a specific topic and chaired by a Full-Time Officer or Student Community Organiser(s).

You will have a chance to share your experiences around that issue and together with your group create a plan to make change - organise a campaign, send an open letter, write a motion for our next democratic meeting, etc.. it will be in your hands to pick the best tool for change!

You will have a chance to change table and discuss a different issue halfway through the Forum.

You will also have the opportunity to join a working group if you wish to remain involved with that work after the meeting.

You must attend in person to contribute to the debate and/or the forum discussion.
