As the society's Asia-oriented group, Wontones is known for being international and inclusive. We focus on singing Asian-oriented music in languages such as Mandarin, Cantonese and English. Ranging from 1990s Hong Kong Cantopop, to modern 2010s Mandarin C-pop, to trendy 2020s K-pop hits and more! We believe music across cultures and decades transcends language barriers and reaches people’s hearts.
We welcome anyone from any ethnic and cultural background (you!) with a passion and interest in singing Asian songs to be part of our community. We tailor to everyone by offering flexible roles: from traditional vocal parts, to parts that do not require speaking the languages, to beatboxing, you would definitely shine in a role that you belong in!
Wontones was initially created as a barbershop performance at the non-comp concert in 2025. The initial name of BOFE (Best of Far East) was pitched as a joke by the gen-11 beatboxer of Bristol Suspensions, referencing the society's biggest annual performance, BOSW (Best of South West). After gaining resounding success, the committee decided to make it the 9th permanent group in the society and was renamed into Wontones. The group quickly gained popularity, alongside its quirky introduction, impressive duets and kungfu choreography introduced by first-gen members.
Last year, new members made their debut performance at BOSW, being the only group to perform a non-English song with G.E.M.’s iconic Mandarin hit, “Countdown”. We also performed externally, including “Kung Fu Fighting” for Bristol ABACUS at their Winter Formal, and a volunteering performance at Katherine’s House for local elderly residents.
In the upcoming year, we are going to expand the group’s potential: spark more performing opportunities with other societies or organisations, explore a wider range of Asian languages such as Korean and Japanese, and hold more socials and events throughout the year, especially during Asian festivals.
Wontones usually rehearse for 2 hours on a weekly basis. Performances, collaborations, song recommendations, and discussions are always welcome. Find us at @wontones.acappella on Instagram and RedNote for more information!
